I agree that the best candidate should get the job. But I feel that is not incompatible with the idea that there should be at least woman in one of the top EU posts (whatever they are in the aftermath of Lisbon) and find it hard to believe that not one woman in a population the size of the EU would be considered suitable by the (predominantly) men that decide.
Of course the truism is that women need not just to be as good as the best men but better. And there’s a relatively small pool of top political women across the Member States who’d be willing to sacrifice their hard-fought career in national politics…
Perhaps the EP President option would be the most straight forward to start off with, just a case of balancing the political groups and getting beyond buggins’ turn rather than getting 27 Member States cooperating?

By the way, there’s also a facebook group for the females in front campaign. Rather like this site I’m never sure whether joining the facebook group equals signing the petition or whether visiting both is necessary.

I’m female and I’m not sure whether I care enough to sign the petition. I’d rather have someone doing a good job. The gender doesn’t matter, as long as good people can grab some top jobs no matter what their gender is.

270 grand is fine, as long as the appointee is worth 270 grand.

You’re competing to attract a highly competent individual, against well-funded private sector organisations. You need to pay a lot these days.

But if the person chosen isn’t worth that sum, there should be hell to pay.

yes it would be good to save money, but if they will follow Italian politics style then the new double hat president will take both the incomes

I think that Mr Saxe-Coburg's run is a very long shot, nevertheless it would be a very dull competition where you shoot the runners in the pre-qualification. I am a republican but until we let monarchies stay in the EU I think we cannot rule out a former monarch per se.

Jon, to make matters even stranger, he is now in a coalition with the former communists, who kicked him out of Bulgaria after the war:) He is also an avid gambler, who sold most of his father’s (King Boris III) valuables, so he could satisfy his urges on the tables in Monte Carlo. And, finally, he is a distant cousin of Her Majesty, so he’ll look out for Britain’s interests, I’m sure:)

One of the points lifted into view in the news reporting on the poll about different European leaders was the general feeling that a separate president of the European Council was not needed.

I tried to scan the Harris poll, but failed to see any mention there. But if the facts are correct, then it is a factor which bolsters the argument for a merger of the presidents’ posts.

If the Lisbon Treaty enters into force, some president of the European Council is required by the treaty, but democratic legitimacy and popular opinion could be taken into account by a double-hatted president based on the European Parliament election results in 2009.
